Multi-generational house plans have become extremely popular in the 21st century. Parents move in to look after children, young adult children return home after college, aging parents move in to be looked after, and grandchildren come visit for extended periods. There are many reasons why you may want to consider a multi-generational design.

House plans designed for multiple generations or with In-Law Suites include more private areas for independent living. Since it looks like a single-family house, your multigenerational home will blend in perfectly into your neighborhood. According to the Pew Research Center, approximately 51 million Americans (or 16.7% of the population) live in a house with at least two adult generations, or a grandparent and at least one other generation.

Pew also reported a 10.5 percent increase in multigenerational households from 2007 to 2009. One driver of this trend is changing demographics. While one would normally expect baby boomers to be downsizing at this stage of their lives, quite a few are actually trading up. Boomers are sometimes referred to as “the Sandwich Generation” because they have children still living at home as well as elderly parents. Second, the recession triggered a wave of so-called “boomerang kids” moving back in with their parents because they couldn't support themselves financially.

The following Starr Homes floor plans will accommodate multi-generational living and if you click the links underneath each plan it will open up to so you can view the rest of the floor plan and photos if we have them:

If you didn't see something that would fit the needs of your family's multi-generational living then give us a call. When can design something for your specific lifestyle and needs. While planning an in-law suite, it’s wise to remember it may only be used for a limited time. Make sure it can flex to other purposes when it’s no longer needed; perhaps it may be used as a guest suite or a home office. Be careful not to design a space so specialized it would impair the home’s future resale value. Experts predict that this is a long-term trend and it's easy to understand why.
